Who is Greg Hardy?

Gregory McKarl Hardy is a well-known American mixed martial artist and former football defensive end. He is currently signed to the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Champion), where he competes in the heavyweight division. Greg previously played in the NFL (National Football League) for six seasons, specifically with the Carolina Panthers.


While at college, Hardy played college football at Ole Miss, where he was selected by the Panthers in the 6th round of the 2010 NFL Draft. His most successful season in football was when he recorded a career-high 15 sacks. In the Panthers’ single-season record, and earning him Pro Bowl and second-team All-Pro honors. Greg was not re-signed by the Panthers due to being found guilty of assaulting a former girlfriend. He spent his final NFL season for the Dallas Cowboys during 2015.

A Football Career in College

He earned a football scholarship from the University of Mississippi. Greg played in all 12 games, with 9 starts as a freshman at left defensive end. He then played 10 games out of 12 games as a sophomore with four starts at the defensive end. Greg missed the first three games as a junior due to having foot surgery to repair a broken bone in his right foot. Out of 13 games, he played 9, recording 18 tackles, 8.5 sacks, 9.5 tackles for loss, 3 quarterback pressures, 1 interception, and 1 pass defended.

Hardy elected to return to Ole Miss for his senior season even after being considered eligible for the 2009 NFL Draft. During the off-season in January 2009, Hardy underwent a second surgery on his right foot. Greg on July 12, 2009, was involved in a car accident along with teammate Dexter McCluster, where he worsened the foot injury and was put back in a walking cast. Greg missed the final three regular-season contests as a senior because of surgery on his fractured left wrist. A Career with the Carolina Panthers

Greg was selected by the Carolina Panthers in the 6th round (175th overall) of the 2010 NFL Draft. On June 17, 2010, he was signed to a contract. In his rookie debut, he managed to record a blocked punt for safety as well as force a fumble, and record 4 tackles. Greg was fined $15,750 on November 9, 2012, for a roughing the passer penalty against Robert Griffin III versus the Washington Redskins in week 9. In the 2013 NFL season, Hardy was ranked 53rd in the NFL Top 100 for his breakout performance. And on July 10, the NFL reduced it to a 4-game suspension so as to avoid a possible legal action on Hardy’s part. He had his first game after suspension against the New England Patriots. An Amateur Career

Greg announced in October 2016, that he would start a mixed martial arts career, and had been training for several months. On November 4, 2017, he made his MMA debut, in which he defeated Joe Hawkins by knockout in a 32-second match. In his 3rd amateur bout on February 16, 2018, he defeated Ryan Chester via knockout 14 seconds into the first round.

A Professional Career

It was announced in April 2018, that Hardy would make his professional debut on June 12 at Dana White’s Contender Series 9. He was awarded a contract by the UFC after winning via knockout in the first round against fellow former NFL defensive end Austen Lane. Greg’s second professional fight was against Tebaris Gordon on the Dana White’s Contender Series 16. He won the fight via TKO in the fight’s opening minute. On September 29, 2018, he faced Rasheem Jones in his third professional fight career at Xtreme Fight Night 352. Hardy won by knockout at 53 seconds in the first round.

An Ultimate Fighting Championship Career

Greg after obtaining an undefeated professional career of 3-0, with all 3 wins coming via Knockout inside one minute. On January 19, 2019, he made his Ultimate Fighting Championship promotional debut against Allen Crowder at UFC Fight Night: Cejudo vs Dillashaw. However, Greg lost the match via disqualification. On November 9, 2019, at UFC on ESPN+ 21, Greg replaced Junior dos Santos to face Alexander Volkov.

He however lost the fight by unanimous decision. Greg on March 28, 2020, was scheduled to face Yorgan de Castro at UFC on ESPN: Ngannou vs. Rozenstruik. But due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event was postponed. The bout eventually took place on May 9, 2020, and Hardy won the fight via unanimous decision. On December 19, 2020, at UFC Fight Night 183, he faced Marcin Tybura. Eventually, he knocked down Tybura in the first round but lost in the second round via technical knockout.

Greg faced Tai Tuivasa at UFC 264 on July 10, 2021, but lost the fight in round one via knockout. On January 22, 2022, Greg was scheduled to face Aleksei Oleinik at UFC 270. However, Aleksei withdrew and was replaced by Sergey Spivak. Just a week before the event, Greg withdrew from the event due to a finger injury, and the bout was removed from the event.
