Anna Ford is a prominent English former Journalist, newsreader, and television presenter. First, she worked as a researcher, news reporter, and later newsreader for Granada Television, ITN, and the BBC. She helped launch the British breakfast television broadcaster TV-am. For four years, she worked as a teacher, including teaching Provisional Irish Republican Army prisoners at the Her Majesty’s Prison Maze in Northern Ireland for two years. Later she was an Open University social studies tutor in Belfast for two years. By the time she joined Granada Television as a researcher, she was thirty in 1974. Initially, she was told she was too old to be a newsreader but became a reporter and newsreader on Granada Sports. In January 1977, she joined the BBC. But only after several months as security clearance from M15 was required because she was then living with a former communist. This led to her BBC personnel life being marked with a “Christmas tree” symbol.

Subsequently, she worked on Man Alive and Tommorow’w World. In February 1978, she moved to ITN and was faced with quickly abandoned legal threats from the BBC for breaking her contract. In March, she began presenting ITV’s News at One and later the 5:45 pm bulletin. Within two months, she had become the first female newscaster on News at Ten. In 1979, she appeared in a skit along with John Cleese and Terry Jones of the Monty Python troupe as part of “The Amnesty International Comedy Gala”.

However, she left ITN in 1981 to join the presenting team of the soon-to-launch TV-am. Her tenure at TV-am was short-lived in part due to fierce competition from the BBC’s casual styles Breakfast Time. The loss of viewers resulted in a relaunch which was perceived as a “dumbling-down” of the station. In 1988, she rejoined BBC. And became part of the presentation team for both BBC One’s Six O’Clock News and BBC Radio 4 Today in 1993.

From 1999, she fronted the relaunched One O’Clock News. She announced on October 30, 2005, that she would retire from broadcasting in April 2006, to pursue other interests while she “still has the interest and energy”. On April 27, 2006, she presented her last One O’Clock News, signing off by introducing a compilation of clips of her career. J Sainsbury plc, the UK supermarket group announced on May 2, 2006, that Ford was joining the company as a non-executive director. She is the Chair of Sainsbury’s board Corporate Responsibility Committee.
