She has an older brother Lancelot Jr. who died from an accident in 1992. The accident involved a motorcycle that Latifah had bought for him.

Being raised in the Baptist faith, Latifah attended Catholic school in Newark, New Jersey, and later Essex Catholic Girls’ High School in Irvington.
