Who is Bobby Bowden?
Robert Checkler Bowden (Bobby Bowden) is a retired football coach. He is well known for coaching the Florida State Seminoles football team from 1976 to 2009.
Bobby Bowden’s Achievements
Bobby is referred to as one of the greatest college football coaches of all time for his achievements with the Seminoles. At his time at Florida State, Bobby guided FSU to an Associated Press and Coaches Poll National Title in 1993. Also a BCS National Championship in 1999, together with twelve Atlantic Coast Conference championships when FSU joined the conference in 1991.
His Seminoles finished as an AP top-5 team for 14 consecutive seasons, setting a record that doubled the closest program. The program however weakened during the mid-2000s, and after his 80th birthday, Bobby was fired by President T.K. Wetherell after a difficult 2009 season. Bobby’s final coaching appearance was in the 2010 Gator Bowl game on January 1, 2010, with a 333-21 victory over his former program, West Virginia.
Bobby’s last part of his career was in an exceedingly race with Joe Paterno to become the winningest NCAA Division I college football coach of all time. The two coaches overtook each other throughout the 2000s, with just a game apart before the 2008 college football season. Despite this on March 6, 2009, an NCAA ruling required Florida State to ”vacate wins for any games during which an ineligible player participated”. This threatened to remove as many as fourteen of Bowden’s wins from the 2006 and 2007 seasons in relation to an academic scandal.
Although the Florida State appealed the ruling, the NCAA upheld it on January 5, 2010. Bobby’s final career record moved to 377-129-4, becoming second to Paterno’s final tally of 409 wins. This happened after the final investigation by Florida State University determined that he was to vacate 12 wins.

Bobby grew an interest in World War II lasting throughout his life while confined to his bed. This was after he was diagnosed with rheumatic fever at the age of 13. He also had a great interest in football as he was an outstanding football player in high school.
He was also a player of football in University as a quarterback, fulfilling a lifelong dream to play for the Crimson Tide. This was as well as playing baseball and running track. Bobby was recognized for his academic and athletic leadership. Bowden is a committed Christian in his religion.
