Who is Andrew Witty?

Sir Andrew Philip Witty is a famous British business executive currently serving as chief executive officer of UnitedHealth Group. Previously, he served as the CEO of GlaxoSmithKline from 2008 to 2017. Witty once served as the chancellor of the University of Nottingham.

In 1985, Witty joined Glaxo UK as a management trainee. He served in various institutions in the UK. Witty once served as the director of pharmacy & distribution in Glaxo Pharmaceuticals UK. Andrew served Glaxo Wellcome Inc as a vice president and general manager of marketing. Between 2000 and 2002, Witty worked as an economic adviser to the governor of Guangzhou, China.

In January 2003, Pharmaceuticals Europe of GlaxoSmithKline plc appointed Witty the president. Following Jean-Pierre Garnier’s retirement as the CEO in 2008, Witty succeeded him.

Witty announced that GSK would place certain patents in a pool in 2009 to make them readily available for anyone in search of new drugs.

Andrew served David Cameron, UK Prime Minister between 2010 and 2015 as a member of the business advisory board.

The University of Nottingham announced in October 2012 that they had appointed Witty the school chancellor with effect from 1st January 2013. He served there as the chancellor until November 2017 when he announced his retirement.

Andrew served on the UNAIDS–Lancet Commission for Defeating AIDS and Advancing Global Health between 2013 and 2015. The commission was co-chaired by Peter Piot, Joyce Banda, and Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma. He joined the UN High-Level Panel on Access to Medicines in 2015. Witty served there until 2016 under the leadership of Ruth Dreifuss and Festus Mogae.

Neil Woodford criticized Andrew’s GSK leadership in November 2015 claiming that he is not carrying out his duties properly. Witty announced that he was stepping down as chief executive in March 2016.

After stepping down, Andrew landed a job as the leader of the National Health Service’s Accelerated Access Collaborative between 2017 and 2018.
Andrew landed a job as the CEO of Optum, a division of UnitedHealth Group in July 2018. In addition to his role as the CEO, Witty was named the president of UnitedHealth in November 2019.
